Cycling, Bike Hire and Self-Guided Mini-Break

Cycling is a big part of French culture and French car drivers are bike friendly.

The Dordogne boasts a huge wealth and variety of natural attractions which are ideal for exploration on two wheels, and as we are located in the golden triangle of the Périgord Noir, between Bergerac and Sarlat this is an ideal base for your cycling break.

From La Salvetat, explore the astonishingly preserved fortified bastide town of Monpazier, Belves, a former English stronghold on a hill top site with magnificent views, Montferrand du Périgord, a pretty little village with a nearby tiny Roman church, Molieres, a beautiful 13th century English bastide or Urval with its medieval four banal (village oven) and 12th century church.  Have lunch in a local restaurant en route before completing the return leg.  (Round trip distances start from approximately 16 km).

We can arrange to hire for you 24-speed Cannondale and 21 speed Trek hybrid/touring bikes via Aquitaine Bike Hire Dordogne.  This friendly English speaking local company will deliver bikes to the hotel (3 days minimum rental period) with maps and route plans and even offer en route assistance in case of breakdown (the bike(s) not yours!).  These lightweight, high-performance bikes are ideal for the country roads in this area or of course you can bring your own!  A detailed map of the area is included with bike hire for you to plan your own routes according to your fitness level.  The more energetic can easily extend routes as required.  We offer a 3+ night Self-Guided Cycle Mini-Break please contact us for details.

Walking

Auberge de La Salvetat  is near one of the Grandes Randonnées or GRs – the GR36, but walking routes run from the door.  Discover the varied landscapes of the Dordogne Valley, where fairy-tale villages with thriving markets, prehistoric painted caves, meandering river valleys with well-marked tranquil paths and majestic chateaux will hold you spellbound.  Exploring independently and with your car at your disposal, the opportunity for discovering this wonderful area on foot is endless – from a 30 minute stroll around town to a 20 kilometre hike!

Locally and around Cadouin the local tourist office has set out a series of walks.  Almost all are circular ranging from 5 to 40 kms using quiet roads and woodland walks and paths. The routes are marked on special maps which we keep on the Reception and are signposted with yellow signs along the way.

Nature

This is an area where man lives in harmony with nature and throughout wildlife abounds – look out for chevreuil (roe deer), red squirrels, eagles, falcons and harriers; butterflies and insects; many vibrant orchids and, of course, mushrooms in all their forms.

In September, during the rutting season, the forests near La Salvetat become an amphitheatre to the bellowing of the mighty cerf (red deer), while in March and November the skies echo to the sound of the migrating grus (cranes).
